Detroit Memorial Day Weekend 2026: Everything You Need to Know
Memorial Day weekend in Detroit is the unofficial start of summer. The weather finally cooperates, the Grand Prix takes over Belle Isle, Comerica Park is packed, and every rooftop bar in Midtown opens its season. It’s one of the best weekends of the year to be in the city — and one of the most popular for out-of-town visitors.
Here’s how to plan it right.
The Main Event: Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle (May 23–25)
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix runs May 23–25, 2026 on Belle Isle, the island park in the middle of the Detroit River between the U.S. and Canada. It’s one of the only permanent street circuits in North America and an experience unlike anything else in the Midwest.
The main IndyCar race is Sunday, May 25. Saturday features support races and qualifying. Friday is practice day — lower crowds, same access for general admission ticket holders.
Tickets sell out before the weekend. Get them now.

- Belle Isle is accessed via the MacArthur Bridge from East Jefferson Avenue on the east side of Downtown
- Parking fills by 9 AM on race days — take a rideshare to Jefferson and walk the bridge, or use the event shuttle
- Race weekend attracts the entire Detroit car scene: exotics, classics, muscle cars — the parking lots are half the show
- Bring cash for concessions, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes
Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park
The Tigers are home Memorial Day weekend. Comerica Park in Foxtown is one of the best ballparks in baseball — the Detroit skyline view from the upper deck is genuinely great, and the stadium food has improved dramatically over the past few years.

Downtown Detroit is walkable for most of the weekend’s activity. The QLine streetcar runs along Woodward from New Center down to the waterfront. Rideshare is reliable throughout Detroit. For Belle Isle on Grand Prix days, use rideshare to Jefferson Avenue and walk the bridge — parking near the island is very limited on race days.
