Detroit is built for date night. The core entertainment district is dense enough to walk between dinner, drinks, and live music in 10 minutes, but distinct enough that each neighborhood feels like its own scene. The plan below is the one we recommend to friends visiting for the first time and to locals who want a no-stress evening that hits everything that makes the city special.
6:30 PM — Dinner in Midtown
Start at Selden Standard on Selden Street in Midtown. It’s the most-awarded restaurant in the city, the wood-fired menu changes weekly, and the room is loud enough to feel alive without killing conversation. Reserve a booth along the south wall — those are the best two-top seats in the building. Plan on $90–$130 for two with wine.

If Selden Standard is booked, Marrow in West Village and Grey Ghost in Brush Park are the two best fallbacks at the same price point. Marrow does the best dry-aged steak in the city. Grey Ghost has a more cocktail-forward room.

8:30 PM — Cocktails in Downtown
Drive or Lyft 10 minutes south to The Whisky Parlor, the second-floor cocktail bar above The Skip on Woodward. Low light, leather chairs, no menu — the bartender asks what you like and builds the drink. It’s the most romantic room in Downtown Detroit and the move that separates a date night from a dinner.
For a livelier option, Castalia at Sfumato in Midtown is a scent-driven cocktail bar that pairs every drink with a custom fragrance. It’s the most unusual bar experience in Michigan.
10:00 PM — Live Music & Nightcap
End at Cliff Bell’s in Capitol Park. The room hasn’t changed since 1935 — Art Deco woodwork, velvet booths, a small stage with live jazz every night. There’s no cover for the bar; tickets are required for the front room. Order the espresso martini and a dessert plate.

If you want a bigger finish, walk three blocks to Little Caesars Arena for whatever’s on the calendar — Red Wings, Pistons, or a touring concert.

Make It a Stayover
If you’re driving more than 20 minutes home, book a room downtown and turn the evening into a weekend. The Element Detroit at the Metropolitan and The Shinola Hotel are the two best mid-range options, both within a five-minute walk of every stop in this itinerary. Sunday morning brunch at the Shinola lobby restaurant, Penny Red’s, closes the trip.

Add an Experience
If you have an extra hour earlier in the evening, a Detroit architecture or speakeasy walking tour through the Capitol Park and Grand Circus Park district is the highest-rated pre-dinner add-on. Tours run year-round and are about 90 minutes.

Parking & Logistics
Park once at the Z Garage on Library Street — it’s centrally located, well-lit, and walkable to every neighborhood listed above. From Z Garage, Selden Standard is a 6-minute Lyft north; everything else is a short walk. Total walking distance for the whole evening is under a mile.
