Nobody warns you about the second year. The first year after leaving Detroit, people are busy: new job, new city, new apartment. The second year is when the little things start to bother them. They can’t find a decent coney. The pop aisle has never heard of Faygo. Somebody at work says “Lions” and they have to explain the whole thing. They are not unhappy where they are. They just miss it, and a box on the porch from home lands harder than almost anything else you can send.
This guide is for the person buying that box. Maybe it’s a brother in Charlotte, a daughter at college in California, a grandparent who retired to Florida, or a coworker who transferred to Austin and keeps bringing up Better Made. We sorted the gifts by what they actually do: food that tastes like home, gear that lets them rep the city, Detroit-made things for the shelf, and one gift that gets them back here in person.
If you want to stay strictly inside the state lines, our companion list of Michigan-made gifts covers the brands from Ironwood to Glen Arbor. This one is narrower and more Detroit, and it’s built around people who live far from here.
The Four-Item Care Package Formula

Don’t overthink it. A good Detroit care package has four parts, and you can mix brands any way you like:
One salty. Better Made chips are the default. One sweet. Hot fudge, nuts or fudge, depending on the season. One pop. Faygo or Vernors, because nothing says home faster. One keeper. Something that stays on a shelf or a wall after the snacks are gone.
That’s it. Four things, boxed well, with a handwritten note. The note matters more than people think. Name the specific thing you thought of when you bought each item.
Shipping notes before you buy
Pop is heavy, so ship a small case rather than a big one, or send cans instead of two-liters. Chocolate and fudge melt, so skip them if the recipient lives somewhere warm or the package will sit on a porch in the sun. Chips arrive crushed unless the box is full, so pack tight with paper. And if you’re shipping from Michigan to Florida in December, remember that “Detroit cold” does not travel with the box.
Food They Can’t Get Where They Live Now

Food is the best gift for a homesick Detroiter because it’s the thing they can’t fake. They can order a Lions jersey from anywhere. They can’t walk into a store in Seattle and find a decent bag of Better Made.
Better Made Potato Chips
Better Made has been frying chips in Detroit since 1930, and the plant has sat on Gratiot Avenue since 1955. Anyone who grew up here has a bag-flavor loyalty that borders on religious. Original and BBQ are the classics. A variety pack covers your bases if you don’t know which camp the recipient is in.

Faygo and Vernors
Faygo started in Detroit in 1907 and Vernors has been poured here since the 1860s. Outside the Midwest, both are hard to find, and a lot of transplants will tell you they’d pay shipping on a case without blinking. Rock & Rye is the Faygo flavor that gets the loudest reaction. Vernors is the pick for anyone who got it as a sick-day drink from a parent. We cover the full histories in our Michigan-made gift guide.

Jiffy Mix
Jiffy is a Michigan kitchen staple. The Chelsea Milling Company in Chelsea, Michigan, introduced the first consumer baking mix in 1930, and the little blue boxes are still made in town. Corn muffin mix is the classic. It’s cheap, it ships flat, and it’s a surprising hit with people who now live where the grocery store carries nothing close.

Detroit-Style Pizza from Buddy’s
Detroit-style pizza was born at Buddy’s Rendezvous Pizzeria at Six Mile and Conant on the east side in 1946. Square, deep, with cheese baked to a crisp edge against the pan. It’s now made far beyond Detroit, but the original is still the one Detroiters mean when they say they miss it. Buddy’s says on its own site that it ships pizza through Goldbelly, so the easiest gift is to order from them directly and have it show up at the door. Check delivery to your recipient’s state at checkout.
If the recipient likes to cook, the better gift might be the pan. A real Detroit-style pizza pan is rectangular, deep and dark. Pair it with a card that says “now you have no excuse.”

Koegel Viennas for a Coney Night
Koegel Meat Company has been making hot dogs in Flint since 1916, when Albert Koegel opened a retail market on Kearsley Street. Flint and Detroit argue about coney style, but the dog under the chili is what Michiganders look for first, and Koegel’s Viennas are a Michigan favorite. Frozen meat is a harder ship, so this one is better for a local pickup if the person is visiting. Our Detroit food gifts that ship nationwide guide covers what travels well.
Germack Nuts and Sanders Hot Fudge
Germack Pistachio Company has been at Eastern Market since 1924, and the roasted nuts survive a box far better than chocolate does. Sanders, a Detroit confection company since 1875, sells hot fudge you can send in cooler months. If you’re gifting in summer, stick to the nuts.

Gear That Lets Them Rep the City

Walk into any airport and you can spot the Detroiters. They’re the ones in the Old English D. Team gear is the easy pick for someone who’s far away, because it gives them something to wear on game day and a way for strangers to start a conversation.
Tigers and Lions caps and jerseys
The Old English D on a Tigers cap is one of the most recognizable logos in baseball. A Lions jersey in Honolulu blue and silver is a safer gift than it used to be, since the team has been worth cheering for lately. Check the size on the listing, because jersey sizing varies by maker.

Red Wings and Pistons
Both have their own fan bases. We put together longer lists for each: the best Red Wings fan gifts for 2026 and the best Pistons fan gifts for 2026.
Carhartt
Carhartt was founded in Detroit in 1889 and is headquartered in Dearborn. A beanie or a work jacket is a gift that works for almost anyone, in any climate where winter exists, and it carries the Detroit story without a logo shouting about it. Check the label on any specific item, since the company makes clothing in many places.
Detroit-Made Gifts for the Shelf and the Wall

The keeper is the part of the care package that outlasts the snacks. These are the Detroit-made things that make a new apartment feel less like a stranger’s.
Pewabic Pottery
Pewabic was founded in 1903 and works out of a historic building at 10125 E Jefferson Ave on the east side. Its iridescent glazes are all over the city, including the Guardian Building. A small tile, vase or trivet is a real Detroit gift, made in the city, and it looks like a gift rather than a souvenir. Pewabic sells online, so you can order without making the drive.
Shinola
Shinola started in Detroit in 2011 and made its name on watches, bikes and leather goods. It’s not cheap, and it’s not for everyone, but a Shinola piece is the gift to give when the person is someone who has already done well and wants something that quietly says where they came from. Browse the maker’s own site for current styles. For more local, non-Amazon ideas, see our list of unique Detroit gifts you can’t get on Amazon.
Motown on vinyl
Berry Gordy bought the house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in 1959 and turned it into Hitsville U.S.A. Since 1985 it has been the Motown Museum, one of the most visited stops in the city. You can’t ship the building, but you can ship the music. A Motown compilation or a Marvin Gaye, Supremes or Temptations record is a gift that works for three generations of the same family. If the person ever visits Detroit, add the museum to the list.
A good book about the city
Mark Binelli’s Detroit City Is the Place to Be, published in 2012, is a smart, readable account of the city’s decline and comeback, written by a journalist who spent years living in the city. It’s a good gift for anyone who left and wants to understand what they left behind.
Maps and prints
A framed Detroit map or skyline print is the simplest wall gift. Search for neighborhood-level maps if the recipient grew up in a specific part of town, such as Corktown, Midtown, or the east side. Most of what’s on Amazon is print-on-demand, so check the seller and reviews before you buy.

The Gift That Brings Them Home

The best thing you can give a person who moved away is a reason to come back. A hotel night is the version of that which works for almost anyone, especially if their family home is full, or if they’d like to treat the trip like a vacation instead of a stay in a childhood bedroom.
A night downtown or in Midtown
For a weekend that centers on a Lions game, a Pistons night at Little Caesars Arena, or a Tigers series, Check rates for Downtown Detroit hotels on Expedia → puts you within walking distance of the stadiums. For museums, the DIA, restaurants and the Motown-era neighborhoods, Check rates for Midtown Detroit hotels on Expedia → is the better base.
If you don’t know where they’d want to stay, send a gift card toward a room and let them pick. You can also start with all Detroit hotels on Expedia →.
Then give them something to do
If they’re coming for Halloween, our ghost tours guide has real options. If they want a food crawl instead, see our Detroit food tours guide. And for a day out of town, try a fall color drive from Detroit.
Who You’re Buying For: Quick Picks
If you’re not sure where to start, match the gift to the person.
The college student. Snacks and a team hat. Anything that fits in a dorm. Jiffy mix is less useful without an oven, so send chips and pop instead.
The retiree who moved south. Food they grew up with, plus a Motown record. Skip anything fragile, and skip chocolate if they live in Florida or Arizona.
The coworker who transferred. A Detroit-style pizza and a Tigers or Lions cap. It’s a low-key gift, and it makes a good icebreaker with the new team.
The sibling who left for a bigger city. A Pewabic tile or a Shinola piece. It says “I know where you came from” without being cheesy.
Budget
You can build a solid care package for a modest price: chips, pop and Jiffy mix. If you want to stay under a set amount, see our guide to Detroit gifts under $50. For the full holiday list, see the Detroit Christmas gift guide.
A Few Things Not to Do
Don’t send a generic “Michigan” shirt made somewhere else and call it a Detroit gift. Don’t buy the cheapest print-on-demand skyline if you can spend a few dollars more on a Pewabic tile. Don’t ship frozen food without checking delivery times. And don’t assume everyone wants more stuff. Some people who moved away would rather get a call, a plane ticket, or a single bag of Better Made, and nothing else.
Last piece of advice: add a note. Tell them the specific thing you thought of when you bought it. “Remember the Faygo at Grandma’s” is the sentence that turns a box of snacks into a real gift.
