Ornaments are the easiest Detroit gift to get right, and the easiest to get wrong. Get it right and someone hangs your gift on their tree every December for twenty years. Get it wrong and you’ve bought a mass-produced “Detroit” bauble that was printed in a warehouse a thousand miles from the Detroit River.
This guide sorts the good ones from the filler. We checked the official shop pages for every non-Amazon ornament below on November 1, 2026, including price, size, material and whether it’s actually in stock. Amazon links go to search results, so check current prices there. Where a page didn’t list something, we left it out instead of guessing.

Detroit landmark ornaments: the series worth collecting
The Detroit Historical Society’s online shop is the best single place to buy a Detroit ornament. The Society (the nonprofit behind the Detroit Historical Museum on Woodward) releases one landmark ornament a year, and every purchase supports the museum. The ones we checked are etched silver with the building named on top and the year and Society name on the bottom, so they read as a keepsake and not a souvenir.
Michigan Central Station
The one to buy first. This was the first ornament in the series (the 2019 edition), listed at $14.99 plus shipping. The shop describes it as a tribute to the station as a symbol of resilience. The Corktown landmark sat empty for decades before Ford finished its restoration and reopened it in 2024, which makes this the one most people tell a story about when they hang it. It’s the right pick for anyone who grew up driving past the station and has opinions about it.
Hudson’s building
The nostalgia pick. The 2021 edition honors J.L. Hudson’s flagship on Woodward. Per the shop’s own description, it was the world’s tallest department store in 1961 and was demolished in 1998. Ask anyone over forty about Hudson’s at Christmas and you’ll hear about the window displays, Toy Town and the Thanksgiving parade. The Society even built a Hudson’s holiday exhibit at the museum last winter (Nov. 8, 2025 to Jan. 4, 2026), so the demand for this stuff is real. The price wasn’t listed on the product page when we checked, so confirm it at the shop before you plan a budget.
Cadillac Tower, Fisher Building, Olympia and Guardian Building
These four cover the architecture side of the series. Cadillac Tower, the Fisher Building (a 2022 edition per the shop page title) and the Olympia ornament are each $14.99, and the Guardian Building ornament, the 2024 edition, is $19.99. The Fisher and the Guardian are two of the most photographed Art Deco buildings in the country, so either one makes a safe gift for a teacher, a coworker or a relative who likes to say “I love that building.” The Olympia ornament is the hockey-adjacent choice, since the Red Wings played at Olympia Stadium until 1979.
Edmund Fitzgerald (2025 edition)
At $19.99, this is the newest in the series and the most timely. The freighter was launched at River Rouge in 1958 and sank on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975, so the 51st anniversary is nine days away. If you have a Great Lakes person on your list, this is the one. Pair it with a CD of the Gordon Lightfoot song if you want to make the whole house go quiet.
Handmade and local: for people who have enough ornaments
Pewabic Pottery Detroit ornament
The best Detroit ornament money can buy. Pewabic Pottery’s Detroit ornament is a 3-inch round porcelain piece showing the skyline and river, hung from a ribbon. It’s made in Detroit, hand-pressed and glazed by Pewabic artisans, and stamped with the Pewabic logo on the back. It comes in matte Pewabic Green or Steel, and because of glaze and firing variation, no two are identical. It’s $29, which is more than every other ornament here, and it’s the only one that looks like a real piece of pottery. Pewabic’s page presents it as a year-round piece, so it’s a good pick for someone who wouldn’t normally decorate a tree. The stock status wasn’t clear on the page, so check before you build a plan around it.
Pure Detroit Michigan ornaments
Pure Detroit makes two hand-painted, laser-cut birch ornaments shaped like Michigan, each about 2.3 inches across and hung on gold-and-white baker’s twine: the Detroit Love version with an engraved heart and the Someone in Detroit Loves You version. Both are $12. Both showed as unavailable on Nov. 1 with a notify-me button, so sign up now. They’re light enough to slip into a Christmas card, which makes them the best ornament to mail to a relative who left town.
Sports ornaments: order these now
Detroit Lions hand-blown glass ornament
The best-looking Lions ornament we found is a hand-blown glass piece from 2BGlass in Honolulu blue, silver and white. It’s about 4 inches tall and 3.75 inches wide, comes with a steel hook, an engraved charm and a gift box, and has no plastic or glitter. Two catches: it’s hand-blown in California, not Michigan, and it’s made to order. The maker’s banner says turnaround is 2 to 6 weeks and that orders placed after Dec. 5 are unlikely to arrive by Christmas, and its holiday section mentions a Nov. 22 cutoff, so treat Nov. 22 as the real deadline. Christmas delivery isn’t guaranteed. The price wasn’t listed on the page we read.
If you need it to ship fast, shop Detroit Lions ornaments on Amazon, and look at the Prime-eligible listings.
Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons
The Historical Society shop sells a Red Wings logo fan ornament for $12.99 and also lists a Tigers logo fan ornament. That’s a good option when you want a team piece that supports the museum. For the full team-gear lineup, we have separate guides to Red Wings gifts and Pistons gifts. For quick shipping: Tigers ornaments on Amazon, Red Wings ornaments on Amazon and Pistons ornaments on Amazon.
Retro and funny picks under $20
The same Historical Society shop has a few cheap picks that work as stocking stuffers or white elephant bait: a Boombox ornament and an Old School Walkman ornament at $12.00 each, a Pierogi Polish folk art ornament (laser-engraved wood) at $14.99, a Sausage folk art ornament at $7.95 and an Artista Mexicana enamel ornament at $16.99. The pierogi and sausage pieces are a good nod to Hamtramck’s Polish roots if you’re gifting to someone who still goes there for paczki. The shop also sells a boxed set of ornament-themed Christmas cards for $16.99.

See the holiday decor in person
Some of the best Detroit holiday decor is free and outdoors. The city tree in Campus Martius is the centerpiece: in 2025 the 22nd annual tree lighting was Nov. 21 with a 62-foot spruce, and the 2026 date should be posted by the Downtown Detroit Partnership before long, so check downtowndetroit.org. We can’t confirm the 2026 date yet.
For a plan that covers the markets, pop-ups and lights, read our Detroit Christmas markets guide and the holiday lights night itinerary. If you’d like a guide to do the driving, browse Detroit holiday tours on Viator or Detroit walking tours on Viator. Pair a tour with an ornament from the museum shop and you’ve covered two gifts at once.
How to buy without missing Christmas
- Order made-to-order pieces this week. The Lions glass ornament and anything handmade can slip past the shipping cutoff.
- Sign up for restock alerts. Pure Detroit’s Michigan ornaments were sold out on Nov. 1. Use the notify-me button.
- Buy the Historical Society pieces for the budget. They’re under $20, and the money supports a Detroit museum.
- Check the edition year. The series changes yearly, and older editions may be harder to find.
- Add a note card. A line about why the building matters to you turns a $15 ornament into the gift people keep.
