Every white elephant has the same three gifts. The scented candle nobody wanted. The “funny” thing that’s funny for four seconds. And the one gift that gets stolen three times and causes a quiet family feud that lasts until Easter.
You want to bring that third one. This guide is built for that, with a Detroit and Michigan angle so your gift has a story the second it’s unwrapped. We ranked each pick by how stealable it is, sorted by price cap, and listed what to skip. Non-Amazon prices were checked on the sellers’ own sites on October 30, 2026. Amazon links go to search results, so check current prices there.
The steal-o-meter: our ranking
Our own call on which gifts actually change hands. “Steal odds” is how likely someone grabs it from you, based on one simple rule: gifts that work for anybody get stolen, gifts that work for one person get left alone.
| Gift | Cap it fits | Where to get it | Steal odds | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Better Made chocolate-covered chips tin | $15 | bettermade.com or 10148 Gratiot | Very high | Only made in fall, sweet and salty, and you keep the tin |
| Carhartt knit beanie | $25 | Amazon, Carhartt stores | Very high | Fits everyone, useful by January, born in Detroit in 1889 |
| Euchre deck + score set | $15 | Amazon, any drugstore | High | Michigan’s unofficial state card game. The party plays it after |
| Belle Isle Nudist Camp mug or can glass | $25 | Pure Detroit | High (family), risky (work) | The best inside joke in Detroit merch |
| Michigan-shaped cutting board | $25 | Amazon, local gift shops | Medium | Looks nice on a counter. Hand-wave optional |
| Petoskey stone polishing kit | $25 | Amazon, Up North gift shops | Medium | A craft project and a state symbol in one box |
| Detroit-style pizza pan | $50 | Amazon, kitchen supply stores | Very high | Every adult in the room secretly wants one |
| Generic gag gift (fake poop, joke socks) | Any | Anywhere | Low | One laugh, then it goes in a drawer |
What’s the right price limit?
$25 is the standard cap, and most gifts land between $15 and $20. A $10 to $15 cap works for a pure gag-gift crowd. $50 only works when everyone agrees in advance, usually at an office party.
Treat the cap as a ceiling, not a target. The person who brings a $60 gift to a $25 swap doesn’t look generous. They look like they misread the group text. The sections below are sorted by cap so you can jump to yours.

Under $15: cheap gifts that still get stolen
Better Made chocolate-covered potato chips
Our top pick at any cap. Better Made, the Detroit chip company that’s been around since 1930, makes milk and dark chocolate versions on its Wavy chip and packs a 7 oz bag inside a collectible yellow-and-red tin. They’re $12.99 each on bettermade.com (as of Oct 30, 2026).
Here’s the local detail that makes it a good story at the party: Better Made only makes them in the fall because the plant has no cold storage, and chocolate and Michigan summers don’t get along. So they show up for the holidays and sell out. Buy early. If you’re on the east side, the factory store at 10148 Gratiot Avenue carries them too. Free shipping on the website starts at $75, so going in on an order with a coworker or two makes sense.
A euchre kit
Worth it for any family party in Michigan. Euchre is the state’s unofficial card game, and a lawmaker once introduced a bill to make it official. Michigan Public calls Michigan the unofficial center of the game, even though it wasn’t invented here. Bonus fact for the gift tag: the joker card was originally created for euchre.
Bundle a nice deck with a set of score markers or a scorekeeping board. It’s cheap, it’s useful, and someone will start a game before the swap even ends. Shop euchre sets on Amazon
A Michigan pop sampler
Go if most of the room is from out of state. A few cans of Vernors and a mix of Faygo flavors, tied with a ribbon, is the cheapest gift on this list and a bigger hit than it should be. Locals won’t steal it. Transplants will. Grab it at any Meijer or Kroger, and add a bag of regular Better Made chips if you’ve got room under the cap.
$15 to $25: the sweet spot
Carhartt knit beanie
The safest steal on the list. Carhartt started in Detroit in 1889 and still has its flagship store on Cass Avenue. The classic knit cuffed beanie fits basically everyone, comes in a dozen colors and gets worn every day from now until April. Nobody has ever regretted ending a white elephant with one. Shop Carhartt beanies on Amazon
The Belle Isle Nudist Camp mug
The funniest Detroit gift that’s still nice enough to keep. Pure Detroit’s Belle Isle Nudist Camp line plays on the city’s long-running joke about a “semi-secret” camp on the island. The 15 oz ceramic mug is $20 and the 16 oz can-shaped glass is $19 at puredetroit.com (as of Oct 30, 2026). The tees and trucker hat are $34, so they only work at a higher cap.
Read the room. At a family party or a friends’ swap, it’s a guaranteed laugh and a likely steal. At a work party with your boss’s boss, maybe bring the chips.
Michigan-shaped cutting board
Go if your group skews toward homeowners. A wood board in the shape of the mitten (and, ideally, the U.P.) looks good on a counter and works as a cheese board for the next party. Pair it with a small block of cheese if you’re under the cap. Check the listing photos to make sure the U.P. is actually on there. Leaving it off is a fight we’re not refereeing. Shop Michigan cutting boards on Amazon
Petoskey stone polishing kit
Go if the crowd has kids or crafty adults. Petoskey stones are fossilized coral from the ancient sea that once covered Michigan, and they’ve been the state stone since 1965. A kit with a rough stone and sandpaper grits turns into a 30-minute project at the kitchen table. It’s the rare white elephant gift that teaches you something. Shop Petoskey stone kits on Amazon
Up to $50: when the office raises the stakes
A real Detroit-style pizza pan
The gift that ends the game. Detroit-style pizza started at Buddy’s in 1946 in blue steel trays borrowed from the auto industry, which is why the crust gets those crunchy, cheesy edges. The pan most home cooks buy now is LloydPans’ 10×14-inch, 2.5-inch-deep hard-anodized aluminum pan. The funny part: it’s made in Spokane, Washington, not Detroit. Put that on the tag.
It fits a $50 cap and every adult in the room will want it. Add a jar of good pizza sauce if there’s room. Shop Detroit-style pizza pans on Amazon
An experience in an envelope
Skip it unless your group likes going out together. An envelope is the least exciting thing to unwrap, so it rarely gets stolen in round one. But in a group of friends, a Detroit food tour or tasting tour can be the gift people fight over in the final round. Check the price per person against the cap before you buy. How to win white elephant (and how the steals work)
Most groups freeze a gift after three steals and ban stealing a gift straight back. The host should say the rules out loud before the first gift is opened, because every family has its own version.
- Draw a late number if you can. The last person gets to see everything. Some groups let the first player steal at the very end to make it fair.
- Disguise the box. A chip tin wrapped as-is is obvious. Put it in a shoebox and people pick it blind.
- Write a one-line tag. “Made only in the fall, in Detroit, since 1930” turns a $13 tin into the gift everyone suddenly wants.
- Bring a gift you’d be happy to go home with. You might.
- Play to the room. Family party: go funny and local. Work party: go useful and local.
Is it white elephant, Yankee swap or Dirty Santa? Mostly a regional naming thing. It’s the same open-or-steal game. White elephant is the most common name in the US, Yankee swap is the New England version and Dirty Santa is what you’ll hear in the South. Some groups expect gag gifts under one name and useful gifts under another, so ask.
What to skip
- Team gear in somebody else’s size. A hoodie is a great gift for one person and a dead gift for the rest of the room. Save team stuff for our fan gift guides.
- Anything that needs a fridge. Coney sauce and paczki are perfect Detroit gifts. They’re terrible gifts that sit under a table for two hours.
- Crude gags at work. HR doesn’t do white elephant.
- Candles with no story. Nobody steals a vanilla candle. Nobody.
- Gift cards with no wrapping. If you must, tuck it inside something to unwrap, like the beanie.
