Detroit doesn’t do one giant German-style Christmas market with a mulled-wine moat. It does something better for actual shopping: a six-week downtown market, four Sunday markets in the sheds at Eastern Market, and a handful of one-weekend pop-ups where the vendor is usually the person who made the thing. Plan it right and you can knock out most of a gift list without touching a mall parking lot.
Every date and hour below was checked against the organizer’s own site or a named news report on October 18, 2026. Where an organizer hasn’t posted 2026 dates yet, we say so instead of guessing.

Downtown Detroit: the Christmas market at Cadillac Square
Downtown Detroit Markets at Cadillac Square
This is Detroit’s Christmas market, and it’s open November 11, 2026 through January 3, 2027. A row of small pop-up shops fills Cadillac Square (60 Cadillac Square), a block from the big tree and the ice rink at Campus Martius. It’s funded by the Gilbert Family Foundation and run by the Downtown Detroit Partnership, and every vendor is a local small business. That’s the whole point of it: since 2017 the market has hosted more than 170 small businesses, according to the Detroit News.
The 2026 vendor list on deckedoutdetroit.com includes Next Chapter Books, Yarn Nerds, INK DETROIT, The Coloring Museum, Mimidae Beverage Co. (zero-proof cocktails, handy for the person who doesn’t drink) and a Waffle Cabin for when your hands need something warm to hold.
Hours, checked Oct 18, 2026:
- Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, except December 14–15 and 21–22 (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
- Tree lighting day, November 20: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. only
- Thanksgiving Day: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (parade crowd special)
- Christmas Eve 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Christmas Day closed; New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Our call: go on a Wednesday or Thursday after 5 p.m. The square looks best lit up, the weekend crowd from the suburbs isn’t there yet, and you can grab dinner downtown after. Don’t plan your market trip around the tree lighting on November 20. The market closes at 4 p.m. that day, and the crowd is there for the tree, not the shopping.
If you’re turning it into a full downtown night, a walking tour earlier in the day gives you the architecture without freezing in a crowd. Viator lists a holiday sweet-treats food tour downtown (donuts, pastries, coffee) that’s a good warm-up before the market.

Parking tip: don’t circle Campus Martius looking for a meter on a Saturday in December. Park once in a garage a few blocks off Woodward and walk, or ride the People Mover to the Cadillac Center stop, which drops you right at the square. Decked Out Detroit keeps a downtown parking directory.

Eastern Market: the big holiday shopping days
Eastern Market has two kinds of holiday shopping: one huge ticketed show on November 8, and four free Sunday markets from November 29 to December 20. Both happen in the sheds at 2934 Russell Street, and both beat Cadillac Square on sheer number of vendors.
All Things Detroit Holiday Shopping Experience & Food Truck Rally
Sunday, November 8, in Sheds 3, 4 and 5. About 200 small businesses, food trucks, DJs in every shed and Santa photos. General admission is $7, sold at the door only, and general doors open at noon. The $15 “Beat the Crowd” VIP ticket is online only and gets you in at 10 a.m. for two hours of quieter shopping plus a tote bag (prices per Eastern Market’s event page, Oct 18, 2026).
Our call: worth the $15. Organizers say the spring edition drew more than 15,000 shoppers. Two hours before that crowd shows up is the difference between browsing and shuffling. Everyone on one VIP ticket has to arrive together, and there’s no will call, so don’t send your sister ahead with your ticket.
Eastern Market Holiday Market (Sundays)
Sundays November 29, December 6, December 13 and December 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These are on top of the regular Saturday Market, which runs 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. year-round. There’s also a Tuesday, November 24 market (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for Thanksgiving food shopping.
This is where to buy the gifts people eat. Think jars, coffee, baked goods, spices and anything that fits in a stocking. The shops along Russell and Market streets are open around it too, so it’s an easy half day.
Our call: December 6 or 13. November 29 is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and plenty of people are still in a turkey coma or traveling. December 20 is the last-minute stampede. The two in the middle are the sweet spot.
Hosting out-of-town family that weekend? A guided Detroit food tour on Viator covers the tasting and the backstory, so you don’t have to play tour guide between market stops.

Midtown and New Center: Noel Night weekend and the craft fair
The first weekend of December is the busiest shopping weekend in the city: Noel Night on Saturday, December 5, and the Detroit Urban Craft Fair on December 5 and 6. They’re about two miles apart, so you can do both in one day.
Detroit Urban Craft Fair at the Masonic Temple
Saturday, December 5 (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Sunday, December 6 (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Admission is $5, and kids 12 and under get in free after 1 p.m. More than 100 juried makers set up in the Masonic Temple’s Drill Hall at 500 Temple Street. It’s the 21st year, and the first under new organizers: Midtown shop City Bird took over from the Handmade Detroit founders who started it in 2005 (as reported by Hoodline in September 2026).
Our call: the best handmade shopping in Detroit, full stop. Vendors staff their own tables, so you’re buying from the person who threw the mug. Go Saturday at 11 for the best selection. Parking around Temple Street gets tight that weekend, so check the fair’s site for the shuttle from City Bird on Canfield.
Noel Night in Midtown
Noel Night is back on Saturday, December 5, after skipping 2025. Midtown Detroit Inc. announced the return in October (Detroit News, Oct 13, 2026), with free programming, shopping and family events across Midtown and the Cultural Center. Hours and the full lineup weren’t posted as of October 18, so check noelnight.org before you go.
Our call: go for the night, not the shopping. Noel Night is about carolers, open museum doors and the whole Cultural Center lit up. Do your real shopping at the craft fair that afternoon, then walk over for the evening.
New Center Holiday Market at the Fisher Building
New for 2026: a holiday market in the Fisher Building on Saturday, December 12. Midtown Detroit Inc. is running it a week after Noel Night, with priority for Detroit-based vendors. Hours weren’t out yet. Even if the vendor list is short, the Fisher’s gold-ceilinged arcade is one of the best rooms in the city to shop in when it’s 20 degrees outside.
Suburban Christmas markets worth the drive
Two suburban markets are confirmed for 2026 and actually feel like the European kind: Rochester’s Kris Kringle Market on December 4 and Plymouth’s Mistletoe Market on December 11–12.
Kris Kringle Market, Downtown Rochester
Friday, December 4, 4 to 10 p.m. on Main Street. Rochester’s Downtown Development Authority models it on Europe’s open-air Christmas markets: handcrafted gifts, specialty food, fresh greens and wreaths. The bonus is the Big, Bright Light Show, the season when downtown Rochester’s buildings are wrapped in lights. It’s about 40 minutes up I-75 from downtown Detroit.
Our call: go if you live north of 8 Mile or want a lights-and-dinner night. One evening only, so it’s busy. Eat early or after 8.

Christmas in Plymouth & Mistletoe Market
Friday, December 11 (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Saturday, December 12 (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.), under the Gathering Building at 760 Penniman Avenue. The 2026 vendor list already has Michigan-made peanut butter, Polish pottery, chimney cakes, handmade ornaments and a vintage camper pouring cocoa, plus free dance performances on a holiday stage.
Our call: the best small-town Christmas feel within 35 minutes of downtown. Do it Friday afternoon if you can. Downtown Plymouth’s restaurants fill up fast on Saturday night.

Frankenmuth ChristKindlMarkt (dates not posted yet)
Frankenmuth’s ChristKindlMarkt is the closest thing Michigan has to a German Christmas market, but its 2026 weekends weren’t posted as of October 18. It’s held at the Frankenmuth Farmers Market (534 N. Main Street) and has run over three weekends in past years. It’s about 90 miles north. Pair it with Bronner’s and a chicken dinner using our Frankenmuth at Christmas day-trip guide, which covers timing, parking and the free Christmas Lane lights.

How to plan a Detroit holiday market weekend
The best single weekend is December 5–6. Here’s the plan we’d use for out-of-town family or a couple’s weekend.
- Saturday morning: Eastern Market’s regular Saturday Market (opens 6 a.m.) for coffee, breakfast and food gifts.
- Saturday 11 a.m.: Detroit Urban Craft Fair at the Masonic Temple. Budget two hours.
- Saturday evening: Noel Night in Midtown, then dinner nearby.
- Sunday 10 a.m.: Eastern Market Holiday Market.
- Sunday after dark: Cadillac Square market and the Campus Martius tree, open until 7 p.m.
Where to stay: downtown, so the Sunday-night market is a walk instead of a drive. The Shinola Hotel and the Westin Book Cadillac are both a short walk from Cadillac Square. The Detroit Foundation Hotel is a little farther, near Huntington Place, with a cozy lobby bar for after.

What to bring: layers and warm boots (Cadillac Square is outdoors, and the Eastern Market sheds aren’t heated like a mall), a tote bag, and some cash for food vendors even though most shops take cards. Shopping for someone you won’t see before Christmas? Buy early in the season. One-of-a-kind makers sell out of their best pieces by mid-December.
For the rest of the season (Wild Lights at the zoo, the rink, the DSO and Fox Theatre shows), see our Detroit holiday events guide.
