Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. That makes Black Friday November 27, Small Business Saturday November 28, and Cyber Monday November 30. If you’re planning a shopping weekend around Detroit, you’ve got four straight days to work with — Thursday evening store openers through Cyber Monday’s online-only wind-down.

Detroit doesn’t really do doorbuster tent-camping culture the way some cities do anymore. Most of the serious traffic now comes from people who show up between 9 and 11am on Friday, avoid the actual midnight rush, and still get good parking. That’s the move if you’re not a diehard.

The Three Malls, and Which One Is Actually Worth Your Morning

Great Lakes Crossing Outlets — Auburn Hills

4000 Baldwin Rd, Auburn Hills, MI 48326. This is the outlet mall — Nike, Under Armour, Coach, Michael Kors, and a genuinely large Bass Pro Shops anchor at outlet pricing rather than full retail. Regular hours run 10am–9pm Monday through Saturday, but Black Friday hours open earlier, typically around 8am. It’s about 35 minutes north of downtown depending on traffic on I-75.

Go here if you’re buying gifts and actually care about the discount, not just the mall experience. The parking lot is enormous and rarely the problem outlet malls in smaller cities become. Outlet stores also tend to restock overnight between Thursday and Friday, so if a specific item is picked over by 10am, it’s worth a second pass around 1pm once trucks have come through.

Somerset Collection — Troy

2800 W Big Beaver Rd, Troy, MI 48084. Two connected buildings — Somerset North and Somerset South — with the closest thing metro Detroit has to a true luxury retail corridor: Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Neiman Marcus, alongside more accessible mall staples. Hours are 10am–8pm Monday through Saturday, noon–6pm Sunday, with Black Friday hours extended earlier.

This is the pick if the person you’re shopping for is hard to buy for and you’d rather browse one nice building than fight three parking lots. It’s also the most walkable of the three — everything connects indoors, so you’re not crossing a windy Michigan parking lot between stops in late November. Valet parking is available at both Somerset North and South if you’d rather skip the structure entirely.

Twelve Oaks Mall — Novi

27500 Novi Rd, Novi, MI 48377. The most conventional of the three — Macy’s, JCPenney, H&M, a full food court — and honestly the easiest one if you just want a normal mall Black Friday without a plan. Monday–Thursday 10am–8pm, Friday–Saturday 10am–9pm, Sunday 11am–6pm.

Go here if you’re bringing kids or in-laws who want the classic mall-day experience and don’t need a specific brand. It’s also the shortest drive from western suburbs like Northville and Plymouth, which matters more than people think once I-96 traffic backs up on Black Friday morning.

Picking Between the Three

If you only have time for one: Great Lakes Crossing wins on pure discount depth, Somerset wins on gift quality for someone who already has everything, and Twelve Oaks wins on convenience if you’re coming from the western suburbs or bringing people who just want a normal mall day. None of them are wrong choices — they’re just built for different shopping trips.

The Downtown Detroit Option

If you’d rather skip the suburban malls entirely, downtown has a smaller but more distinctly Detroit version of Black Friday built around two stops.

Small Business Saturday — Where Detroit Actually Shows Up

November 28 is Small Business Saturday, and in Detroit this is arguably the better shopping day than Black Friday itself. Three spots do the most work:

Eastern Market

Eastern Market runs its Saturday market year-round, 6am–4pm, rain, shine, or snow — including Small Business Saturday. Downtown Detroit Markets — Cadillac Square

The holiday market setup at Cadillac Square runs local vendor stalls through the season, and Small Business Saturday is typically one of its busiest days. Good stop if you’re already downtown after the Nike/Shinola walk.

City Bird — Midtown

460 W Canfield St, open 11am–7pm Monday through Saturday. City Bird has been the anchor of the West Canfield strip since 2005 — cards, gifts, and goods from more than 200 Great Lakes-region makers, run by seventh-generation Detroiters Andy and Emily Linn. Next door is Nest, their home goods and plant shop, if you want to make it a two-stop visit. A Simple Friday–Sunday Plan

Friday: Pick one mall based on who you’re shopping for — outlet pricing at Great Lakes Crossing, luxury browsing at Somerset, or straightforward mall-day at Twelve Oaks. Go mid-morning, not at open.

Saturday: Eastern Market in the morning while it’s less crowded, then City Bird and Nest in Midtown, then Cadillac Square if you’re downtown anyway.

Sunday: Recovery day, or the Nike Community Store and Shinola walk if you saved the downtown trip for last.

What Actually Discounts Well in Detroit Sports Gear

If Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, or Pistons gear is on your list, know where the real discounts are. Past-season jerseys and any player who’s since been traded or cut drop the hardest — sometimes 40-50% off. Great Lakes Crossing and Twelve Oaks both have surface lots big enough that Black Friday parking is rarely the headache people expect — arrive by 10am and you’re fine. Somerset gets tighter since it’s more vertical; the parking structures fill first, so valet is worth the fee if you’re going midday. Cyber Monday and the Days After

Cyber Monday, November 30, is worth holding a few items back for if you’re not set on buying in person. A realistic Black Friday morning at one mall plus lunch runs most people $150–$400 depending on how many people you’re shopping for — separate from what you’re actually spending on gifts.
